Two years, one eye. From colour and mix-prints to the history of clothing across cultures — with Bee, at W.I.T.

Fashion Styling at W.I.T. is a two-year hands-on course. Year one builds the stylist's toolkit — colour, mix-prints, body types, image making, terminology, style developing. Year two goes deep into the history of clothing, from the moment humans first put something on their body, across every movement of Western art and cultures around the world.

the stylist's toolkit

The first year builds the vocabulary and the eye — then learns to use them. We study colour theory and its techniques: from the colour wheel to colour blocking, from temperature to how colour controls the message. We learn styling techniques: mix-print, layering, proportion, accessorising, and how to make a garment feel new without changing it. We explore the styles around us — street style, subcultures, editorial, social media — and learn to read and name them. We also cover the history of contemporary fashion: the trends, movements, and iconic figures of every decade from the 20th century to today, so we understand where the image of our time comes from. Body types, style developing, image making, and the terminology of the industry complete the toolkit.

the history of clothing

The second year is a journey through the history of clothing — from the very beginning, when humans first decided to wear something to protect themselves from the weather and nature, and to signal their place inside a tribe. From there, across every spectrum and movement of art in Western culture, and into cultures from around the world — travelling from the Incas to Russia, from India to Japan and beyond. We read silhouette, ornament, ritual and craft, and use them as living material for a stylist's eye today.
